What began as an interest in Play-Doh slowly molded into an admiration for the arts. I grew up surrounded by creativity; from my Oba-chan’s origami to my father’s home videos. My father loved film. He was a television producer in Japan, however, he never had the opportunity to further develop his skills. After his passing, art became more than just colorful clumps of Play-Doh. It became a way to cope with a difficult period in my life and my tool to express my introverted self. At ArtCenter, I was given the opportunity to do what my father could not: further develop my artistry and discover my passion in working with my hands. After years of developing and perfecting my craft, I believe that working with hands is an important part of the creative process; textures, smells and form help enforce design and give designers an opportunity to make connections with their viewers. It is what excites me.

My name is Ashley Kakazu, a maker and molder with a passion for print and packaging design.
